PROPERTY TAX DEFERMENT This program allows qualified BC homeowners to defer the payment of annual, municipal or rural property taxes on their home. These deferred taxes must eventually be repaid, either before the home is transferred to a new owner, other than a surviving spouse, or upon death, through repayment by the estate of the deceased owner. The deferred taxes are actually paid by the Province of British Columbia to the taxing authority (municipal or provincial), on behalf of the homeowner. These must later be repaid, as noted above, with interest and an administration fee payable to the province. Nevertheless, this is often worthwhile because it eliminates the strain of annual property tax payments upon the senior homeowner's cashflow. Further, interest charges are relatively low. Seniors, aged 60 and over, may defer the payment of their property taxes under the Property Tax Deferment Program. Widowed spouses of any age may do the same, as well as certain persons with disabilities. For more information on this program, contact the Victoria office below: (250) 387-0555 Seniors seeking additional information, including qualifications for the British Columbia Property Tax Deferment Program, and how to apply, may wish to click on the link below: British Columbia Property Tax Deferment Program - click here
If you are a senior homeowner, and you do not wish to defer your property taxes, you may still want to take advantage of the British Columbia Home Owner Grant. For more information on the Home Owner Grant, and eligibility requirements, click on the link below: BC Home Owner Grant - click here |
