Beyond Traditional Retirement Planning
The vast majority of people have 'retirement' as
their primary long-term financial goal. Very few of us are fortunate
enough to be in an occupation we never want to leave. Granted, many
artists, writers and musicians fall into this latter category, but the
rest of us are left to build our retirement nest egg and count the days.
In an effort to better understand the transition to
retirement, Cheri dispatched "Scoop" Hoogendoorn to interview
retirees about the various aspects of the retirement process. Some of
these seniors grew up in and around Victoria, other retirees moved here
to Victoria to retire.
We found that many of the seniors interviewed did very
little, formal retirement planning, at least not until they were quite
close to retiring. By contrast, most people today are now actively
engaged in the retirement planning process by the time they're 40, use a
financial planner, or have some kind of retirement plan in place at
work. However, as indicated, retirement planning is much more than
setting financial goals and having enough money saved up. For example,
one might want to think about what it's going to be like to have your
spouse around 24 hours a day! Or, you might want to brace yourself for
the impact retirement will have on your friendships with co-workers.
Beyond your financial goals, there are many factors to
consider when developing a retirement plan, and it's our hope that these
interviews will help make your transition to retirement much smoother. |
